Do you ever worry that you are wasting your life?

I definitely did. In fact, I wrote that in my journal many years ago when I was in the middle of the diet-binge roller coaster ride.

  • I woke up every day thinking about food, my body, and what I would eat that day to “be healthy”
  • The notebooks I had filled with calories and points could fill up a spare bedroom
  • Social events and vacations immediately prompted the thought “they will notice I gained weight” or “I need to lose weight by then”
  • Deep down I knew I wasn’t living life the way I wanted to, but I didn’t know how to pull myself out of it.

If this is you, I want you to imagine what it would feel like to feel empowered in your body and proud of your choices on a consistent basis. I promise you, it isn’t too late.

Dieting steals our motivation. It makes us ineffective. It keeps us spinning our wheels in a system that was never built to work.

If you are ready take the first step to motivating yourself with what matters to you, download my free Create Powerful Motivation guide (which is quite beautifully designed if I do say so myself), and walk through the 3 simple steps to create motivation that works for YOU in 15 minutes or less. You will get a simple formula to write ONE SENTENCE you can use to motivate yourself on a daily basis.

You can write it on your bathroom mirror, put on the background of your phone, or just read it and repeat it in your mind.

Look, I know how much it hurts to live a life worrying you are missing out, not stepping into the person you were truly meant to be, vibrant, passionate, curious, vulnerable, and brave.

You can listen to the podcast all day, but taking that first step, putting pen the paper (or typing on your phone) is required for true lasing change. It’s time to start living my friend.

“What Exactly Are You Doing? Just Eating What You Want? That Doesn’t Seem Very Healthy….”

The reality is, most people, maybe you, still don’t really understand this approach.

It’s very understandable. It’s nuanced, and counter to so much of what we are taught throughout our lives.

And yet, as I mentioned last week, I’ve NEVER believed in it more. Not only the non-diet and weight inclusive approach, but the general approach of learning how to approach yourself with an autonomous mindset when it comes to your health. Basically, how to guide yourself to work smarter, not harder on your health, and what on earth that means.

But first, to put forth the effort that is required for such an approach like this (one that requires consistent effort, and dealing with uncomfortable previously avoided emotions), we must understand WHY we are doing it, and buy into the approach.

Top Episodes for Understanding Why Health at Every Size and Intuitive Eating Makes Sense at a Scientific and Biological Level

These are great episodes to listen to to better understand the statement “obesity causes health problems” is scientifically flawed and almost always unhelpful.

These might also be good episodes to share with someone who asks questions like:

  • “But what about someone who ‘needs’ to lose weight for health reasons?”

OR makes statements like:

  • “My doctor told me that X problem was related to my weight and I need to lose weight to improve it, so I can’t do an anti-diet approach.”

Episode 32 with Dr. Jillian Murphy. Go to 23:45 for her answer about what Health At Every Size is and breaking down the social component of HAES and also the science behind the movement and why it makes sense.

Episode 36 with Joanna Pustilnik

Episode 56 with Dr. Maggie Landes, MD. We break down why focusing on weight is counterproductive, and how this doctor finally broke out of the ineffective diet cycle after many years of yo yo dieting.

Top How To Episodes for Getting Out of the Binge Cycle

One of the things I’ve learned through owning my own business and being a mother is the importance of delegation. I primarily learned this through my business training Run Like Clockwork, which has been incredible.

One aspect of delegation that is hard, but crucial, is realizing that often, we feel like we need to do everything ourselves and that no one will do it to our standards. When in reality, though it can be incredibly hard on our ego, often people have strengths that lead them to do things better than us.

I’ve had to learn this in terms of raising my kids, that some people are simply better at teaching them things than I am, or even enjoy doing certain things with them more than I do, and that’s 100% okay.

In terms of business, I’ve learned that some people are better than me at breaking down these nuanced topics, particularly as it relates to the Diet Binge Cycle. Often, ironically, these aren’t clinicians by training, but they are SO GOOD at what they do.

In episode 53, Stefanie Michele does an incredible job sharing her story of 25 years of disordered eating and binge eating, many eating disorder treatment centers, and what finally helped her break free. We cover 5 questions to ask yourself to help you break from of the binge eating cycle, and you will NOT want to miss it.

Back in episode 35, Victoria Evans is another example of someone who went through the personal experience of disordered eating and binge eating and now coaches women in this area. She and Stefanie both has incredible gifts in this area, and her practical advice for how to build trust with your body, combined with Stefanie’s you will not want to miss.

Top How To Episode for Practicing Self-Compassion

Dr. Adia Gooden is a rock star. My conversation with her about Unconditional Self Worth shook me to my core. Her ability to model language of how you can and should truly talk to yourself in moments of pain and shame is crucial, and is a skill I work on everyday and you should too. It impacts pretty much everything.

Dr. Alexis Conason is also incredible. She has an amazing new book and it was such a privilege talking to her about truly weight inclusive mindful eating and how it’s essentially the key to everything. And don’t worry, you can get the benefits of mindfulness without attending a 7 day mindfulness retreat.

Inspiring Stories Episodes

There are stories infused in most every episodes, but these stories continues to stay with me and with my listeners. All three of these women were kind enough to come on and share their journeys with us in these episodes. Make sure you listen in and key in on the differences that made the difference for them (I’ll give you a hint, it relates to permission, freedom, and autonomy).

  2. Jenn Radke
  3. Racheal Rickabaugh

Episodes With Tips Covering Wholistic and True Wellness

One of the main messages in this episode is learning that we over focus on eating and exercise when it comes to health. Not that those things don’t matter, but there’s so much that matters so much more, that we barely focus on because we are so wrapped up in calorie tracking and the next weight loss plan.

What are we missing out on and not focusing enough on?

  1. Sleep! Episodes 33 and 34 with Heather Gunn, PhD, go over Why Sleep Matters and How to Improve it from an incredibly sleep researcher who has a specialty in understanding autonomy and relationships!
  2. Culture Factors and Quality of Life. In the Lifestyle Medicine episode with Dr. Alyssa Vela, we delve into the field of Lifestyle Medicine and how broadening our view of health can serve everyone, regardless of body size or health status, and how cultural factors are often not considered, but crucial to our overall well-being.
  3. Working with Our Brain and Personal Characteristics. In the episode about ADHD, Eating Behavior, and Weight with Dr. Karen Stewart we dive into the relationships here, and how for all of us, ADHD, or not, understanding how your brain works and functions optimally is key with making any lifestyle change.
  4. Actual Evidence-Based Nutrition! In this episode with Dr. Yami you will learn ALL about Plant Based Eating from a Non-Diet Framework and why Diet Culture very often moves us away from positive nutrition, not towards it as it claims!

More Takeaways Based On a Year of Podcasting

  1. Autonomous motivation is the key. I’ve never believed in this approach more, and I believe autonomy is the key to the lock that makes all of these complex topics make sense.
  2. Call out systems, not people. Our field, health care, many many systems are failing us. But people are failing us, or at least, I don’t believe they are trying to. We are all trying to figure this out given what we’ve been taught.
  3. Social media can be a start, but it isn’t the long-term solution. Social media can be good, but my gut says it isn’t how we are going to solve these problems. This podcast has been an incredible source of learning and growth for me, and my hope is that it’s helped you, whoever is listening, to learn from these conversations too in a non-judgmental space.

Support Independent Bookstores Near You!

Did you know that that if nothing slows their momentum, Amazon will have almost 80% of the book market by the end of 2025?

Look, I love the convenience of Amazon, but I’ve got a super cool way that you can support local bookstores and my blog and podcast simply by buying books like you already do! You can choose any bookstore on the list in the US and Canada (they plan to expand to other counties in the future) OR you can just let the donation get split between all stores. As of this recording, they have raised 15 million dollars for local bookstores. On my bookshop, you will see my absolute favorite books related to health and wellness, courage and vulnerability, and even my favorite fiction and kids books!

My recent favorite related to improving the quality of our lives was Digital Minimalism. Our family actually decided to do an optional screen free August to re-evaluate the role of screen time in our lives.

So if you believe in supporting local businesses, please consider buying your books through Bookshop from now on!
