Episode 97. Do you struggle with the concept of intuitive eating? Do you in theory think it sounds amazing, but have a hard time making it a reality in your or your client’s life? Are you a professional (therapist or dietitian) who loves intuitive eating but notices that some clients really have a hard time “getting it”? If so, this conversation is for you!
This is truly one of my favorite interviews I have done in a long time, because Dr. Kim Daniels really helps break down why intuitive eating may not be working for you or your clients, and what to do about it.
We talk about her training and experience with Internal Family Systems theory and using it to help people heal from binge eating disorder, disordered eating and/or chronic dieting.

What to Expect in this Interview
In this interview, we cover:
- 5:05-19:15: Dr. Daniel’s experiences with Internal Family Systems and Intuitive Eating and how she got into doing this work
- 26:32: Why she thinks Internal Family Systems helps people get to the true root of the issue, and why Intuitive Eating may not always be necessary
- 31:35: Why we do things that seemingly don’t make sense, but they actually do once we understand them (e.g., How a part of you might keep eating to rebel against a parent who died years ago)
- 32:37: Why intuitive eating doesn’t work for everyone (Hint: It all depends on how parts of you use it, and if you have a manager part that uses it versus truly connecting with self, it will be really confusing and hard to build self-trust and likely lead to frustration)
- 35:45: Is emotional eating a real thing or not?
- 36:15: Is binge eating only in response to restriction?
- 44:45: How to work with parts of you that still want to lose weight
- 50:40: Fun Bonus: How Dr. Daniels and I use adult creative activities to pursue authenticity!
- 1:01:20: Another Fun Bonus: What having a black belt in karate taught Kim about women and self-defense.
- And so much more!
